It’s up to you to take a proactive approach to preventing STO accidents. Poorly managed maintenance activities and procedures raise the risk of workplace accidents involving workers at all levels, across all STO industries.
The Piper Alpha disaster of 1988 saw the North Sea oil and gas platform turn into a blazing inferno within seconds, killing 167 workers – a tragic example of the potential consequences of inadequate maintenance procedures.
Hard Dollar’s STO expert, Bruce Wallace, maintains that good plant maintenance is essential to prevent workplace risks; but the implementation itself can be a high risk activity for the workers that carry it out. Therefore, detailed, accurate planning and risk analysis is the key to a safe shutdown, turnaround, or outage.
It’s estimated that in Europe alone, 10-15% of fatal accidents at work can be attributed to poorly executed maintenance operations. It is vital therefore, that maintenance is carried out properly.
